Soy Wax vs Paraffin Candles: What's the Difference? | Faine Candle

Faine Candle

When we started Faine Candle, the choice of wax wasn't something we deliberated over for long. Natural soy wax was the only option that made sense for us - for our customers, for the quality of the fragrance experience, and for the values the brand stands for.

But we understand that not everyone knows why this choice matters. The candle market is full of products that look premium but are made with the cheapest possible ingredients. So let's talk honestly about what's actually inside your candle - and why it matters more than you might think.

What Is Paraffin Wax?

Paraffin wax is a petroleum by-product. It's derived from crude oil refining - specifically, from the sludge that remains after lubricating oils are extracted from petroleum. It's then bleached and chemically treated to produce the white, odourless wax used in the majority of candles sold globally.

Paraffin is cheap, widely available, and extremely easy to work with, which is why it dominates the mass-market candle industry. It holds fragrance well and produces a clear, consistent burn - on the surface, it looks like a perfectly fine material.

The issues lie beneath the surface.

The Problems with Paraffin

Soot and Air Quality

Paraffin candles are known to produce significantly more soot than natural wax alternatives. That black residue you sometimes see on the inside of a glass jar, or on the ceiling above where a candle habitually burns? That's largely carbon particulate from incomplete combustion of petroleum-derived wax.

Studies have shown that burning paraffin candles regularly can affect indoor air quality, releasing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including toluene and benzene - both of which are classified as hazardous air pollutants. In well-ventilated spaces with occasional use, the risk is minimal. But for regular candle users, it's worth knowing what you're burning.

Not Renewable

Paraffin is a fossil fuel by-product. It is not renewable, not biodegradable, and its production is tied to the environmental footprint of the oil industry. For a product as personal and home-centred as a candle, that feels like an unnecessary compromise.

What Is Soy Wax?

Soy wax is made from hydrogenated soybean oil - a fully plant-based, natural, and renewable material. It was developed in the early 1990s as a natural alternative to paraffin, and it has become the gold standard for premium, health-conscious candle making.

Candles in the Faine Candle range is made with natural soy wax, hand-poured in small batches at our Donegal studio.

The Benefits of Soy Wax

Cleaner Burn

Soy wax burns significantly cleaner than paraffin. It produces minimal soot and far fewer VOCs, making it a better choice for indoor air quality - particularly important in Irish homes where windows aren't always open year-round.

Better Scent Throw

Because soy wax burns at a lower temperature, fragrance oils are released more gradually into the air rather than being burned off quickly. This produces what candle makers call a "cold throw" (fragrance detectable before lighting) and a sustained, even "hot throw" (fragrance release while burning) that fills a room beautifully without being overwhelming.

Biodegradable and Easy to Clean

Soy wax is water-soluble and biodegradable. Spills clean up with warm soapy water. When you've finished your candle, the vessel can be cleaned out easily and reused - something that's much harder with paraffin residue.

Supports Sustainable Agriculture

Soybeans are a renewable crop. While large-scale soy agriculture has its own sustainability complexities (mostly related to land use for animal feed), the soy wax industry operates on a small fraction of global soy production and uses agricultural by-products rather than primary crop outputs.

Other Natural Wax Alternatives

For completeness, it's worth mentioning other natural wax types you may encounter:

  • Beeswax: Completely natural and burns very cleanly. However, it's not vegan-friendly and comes at a significantly higher cost, which is reflected in the price of beeswax candles.
  • Coconut wax: Excellent burn quality with a beautiful creamy appearance. Often blended with soy wax for premium candles.
  • Rapeseed (canola) wax: Increasingly popular in European candle making as a locally grown alternative to soy. Also burns cleanly and supports European agriculture.

All of these are preferable to paraffin. Soy wax remains our choice for its combination of performance, sustainability, price accessibility, and availability.
